Comparison
MemDecks compared with Duolingo
Duolingo is a course: a designed path through a language, with grammar, listening, speaking and a curriculum someone else sequenced. MemDecks is not a course and does not try to be. It builds vocabulary from words you chose or were offered, and it has no syllabus, no levels and no streak. If you are starting a language from zero, Duolingo will take you further than MemDecks will. If you have specific words you need to own, that is the MemDecks job.
What Duolingo does better
- It is a course. Duolingo sequences grammar, listening and production into a path. MemDecks teaches words and, through Phrase Builder, short phrases. It will not teach you to conjugate a verb.
- Language coverage. Duolingo offers many more languages than the 16 MemDecks supports, including several MemDecks does not.
- Habit design. Streaks, reminders and daily goals work for a great many people. MemDecks deliberately has none of that, which is a real cost if external structure is what keeps you going.
- Polish and scale. A large company with a large staff builds it. MemDecks is one person.
- Speaking and listening exercises. Duolingo asks you to produce speech. MemDecks plays audio but never asks you to speak.
Duolingo is free to use and also sells paid subscriptions. Prices and tier names change; check duolingo.com for what is current. Checked 2 September 2026.
What MemDecks does better
- You choose the words. Type any word into MemDecks and it becomes a card with a picture and audio. A course teaches its list, in its order.
- No streak, no guilt. MemDecks does not count consecutive days, does not send reminders, and does not take anything away when you stop. Nothing accumulates while you are gone.
- No ads and no paid tier. MemDecks is free with nothing sold inside it as of 2 September 2026. See pricing.
- Small languages get real support. Armenian and Greek get purpose-built transliteration and chosen voice profiles rather than whatever the platform defaults to.
- Your existing vocabulary is usable. Import an Anki deck or build your own and the games are built from it.

Using both
This is the combination MemDecks is designed to survive. Take the course for structure, and when a word from a lesson matters enough that you want to own it, type it into the MemDecks Translator and it becomes a card with a picture, audio and a script rendering. The course supplies sequence; MemDecks supplies possession of specific words.
